Court Utilization

A measure of how effectively a court is being used relative to its total available time, accounting for booking duration and turnover.

Court utilization goes beyond simple occupancy by factoring in the quality of usage. While occupancy measures whether a slot is booked, utilization considers actual playing time, turnover efficiency, and revenue generated per hour of use.

For example, a court might show 80% occupancy but only 65% utilization if there are gaps between bookings for cleaning, setup, or late starts that reduce effective playing time.

Improving utilization often involves operational changes — faster court turnovers, better scheduling to minimise gaps, and optimising session lengths to fit more bookings into available hours.

Why it matters

Utilization is a more nuanced metric than occupancy alone. A venue with high occupancy but low utilization has operational inefficiencies that can be improved without building new courts. It helps identify where process improvements can boost revenue from existing infrastructure.
